Continuing with our theme of spotlighting fantastic progressive metal debuts in 2012, we are very excited to help spread the word about Dissona, a fairly new band from Chicago that has just released their self-titled debut album. Yep, just as you probably already guessed it, it’s a great one. Seriously great. Right up there with the best of the great avant metal bands. If you don’t know ‘em, I’m talking about that special lot of bands on the “Out” end of the spectrum -- UnExpect, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Akphaezya, etc. And now Dissona, a quintet of lads from The Windy City. I’ve listened to their album at least 10 times and it’s one of those rare albums that takes a long time to get to know really well which is almost always a good thing (like a fine wine? I dunno). The songs are all so different and the band has so many disparate influences that it’s very hard to pigeonhole them into just one genre. I read once that unclassifiable bands are often labeled avant-garde cause no one knows what the hell to call ‘em. Definitely true in this case because the band has so many influences across so many genres, metal or otherwise. To wit, give a listen to the first track on the record, “Inverted Swarm”. In the span of just under 5 1/2 minutes you’ll hear some driving death metal, a great vocal melody and even some Latin jazz fusion. Every listener is different so you’ll all have your own favorites, but I’m especially partial to the wacky and beautifully creepy “Eccentress” which is really hard to describe but sounds to me like a prog metal operetta crossed with a David Lynch-esque movie soundtrack. And to top it off the songs ends with about a minute of bells. Just wonderful stuff. Goddamn, this is a great year for new bands! So far I’m going nuts for Acyl, Beyond The Bridge, Simulacrum, Effloresce, Dimension Act, S.I.Q. and now Dissona. All of these groups are just so completely different and unique so can we finally put that whole “every prog metal band sounds like a bad Dream Theater clone” crappola to rest? Please, I’m beggin! We recently asked the band to sit down with us for an in-depth interview and we’ll be posting that next week. Hopefully we’ll be hearing much more of them down the road. Meanwhile, please give them a listen and experience the uniqueness of this very special band.

As a writer for My Global Mind, I get to listen to truckloads of new music each and every week of the year. One thing we try to do here that a lot of other rock and metal publications is be more to open to communication with unsigned bands. That’s not to say that if we get something sent to us that’s shit we won’t tell you it’s shit…We’ll just do it in a slightly nicer way than some. The benefit of this format though comes in those rare moments where an unsigned band blows us away. Take for example this recently released debut album from DISSONA, with a band name that reminds me of modern radio rock and an album cover that fails to ignite my interest, it’s safe to say that if I wasn’t a music reviewer this one would have slipped right by me without nary a glance. So how glad am I that I spent some time with this album? Very fuggen glad! Seriously though, DISSONA is one of the best unsigned bands I have heard in a long time and this album is a truly fantastic example of a band that is ready for the big time. DISSONA base their sound in the progressive metal mold, with a little bit of power metal, some slight symphonic elements and more melody than you could possible ever need. There’s also a modern element to the whole thing with some death metal influence and a goth rock tinge that will help it be relevant to today’s music market. Maybe the best compliment I can give the band though is that they really don’t sound like anything else going around at the moment. Sure at times I’m reminded of SYMPHONY X, then EPICA, then BLIND GUARDIAN, then VOYAGER and even a bit of the latest IRON FIRE release, but as an overall sound, DISSONA are doing something pretty unique, refreshing and exciting. While progressive in it’s nature, the band seemingly don’t feel the need to go on fifteen minute journeys to get their stories across, and there is no moment in this disc where it slows sown for too long or goes off on too wild of tangent. Everything is cohesive and melodically balanced while still being interesting and intense. Highlights for me personally where FAWN, LAPSE INTO HYSTERIA, FICTION and most of all IMMERSION, a great track with a symphonic back bone and some great emotion filled gothic sounding vocals. But truly, this is one of those albums where everybody will have different favorites and not a second of the running time is wasted with filler. It’s ridiculous to think that a band as good as DISSONA are yet to gather the interest of a decent label, but if this debut is anything to go by then surely it’s only a matter of time. Do yourself a favor and get on this band now before everybody starts talking about them.

A good progressive metal album is like a maze. Full of twists and turns that keep you guessing and doubling back on yourself. Having you, the ideally puzzled listener, scratching your head as you struggle to come to grips with that strange sense that you know where you're going until you round a bend and WHACK! You're confronted with something entirely unexpected as things undergo an abrupt change and for a split second you've got no idea what's going on until the sudden morph in sound picks you up and carries you further along. What am I babbling about? Well I'm just describing where I was at when coming to terms with Dissona's latest, and to date only, album, the self titled Dissona. I'll say this upfront; if you like avant-garde/progressive bands of Leprous' ilk you're going to find something to enjoy here. It's got that same bewildering yet immediately engaging mix of influences from various progressive legends. Whereas Leprous, such as in their latest release, manages to convincingly mask these influences with their own guise, Dissona don't quite manage this same feat as their identity isn't quite as solidified. These influences are just as wide ranging though, if not moreso, and Dissona bring them together in a staggeringly diverse album. The strong symphonic progressive elements which form the backbone of this release are reminiscent of bands such as Symphony X and Suspyre, as can be seen on "Nest" and "Immersion". This is a parrot of an album, it mimics those it witnesses and its plumage is bright and colourful, almost overindulging to the senses. "Eccentress", what is most definitely a highlight, swings in with an amusing swagger with many influences being brought into the fray, the obvious presence of prog rock legends Gentle Giant are dealt with exceptionally well. To say that the vocalist, Dave Dubenic, is talented would be an understatement, his mimicry and delivery in general is extraordinary. His voice is so diverse it is difficult to follow him throughout the album, he takes on an impossible array of personas ranging from Gildenlow to Hedlund to Townsend. He breaks free from rarely witnessed cleans to dominating harsh vocals with ease. While Dubenic certainly steals the show, breathing life into this wonderful album is a band of equal diversity and creativity for song writing. The guitar work is delicious to say the least; always shifting to maintain consistent interest in the listener. The bass and drums in particular hold a strong presence throughout giving the album a very satisfying density, with the keyboards traced through efficiently never over-saturating things. This is a debut unparalleled in its ability to bring so many influences to the table and serve such a tantalising and hearty gourmet meal of progressive metal.
