Heroes spend Thursdays in Satellite by By Emily Holly
With Fall Out Boy-inspired guitar riffs, Blink-182-esque vocals and a unique blend of lyrics and quirkiness comes local Houston punk powerhouse Caney Creek Heroes, who have big dreams and an even bigger show ahead of them. The band’s trio of brothers David, Nick and Sebastien Fisher will be back at the UC Satellite today to promote and sell tickets for the Battle of the Bands and make animal balloons — a unique talent Nick taught his brothers. “We are playing the Battle of the Bands at Fitzgerald’s on Feb. 20,” Nick Fisher said. “You should come see us. It’s going to be awesome.” Based out of New Caney, Texas, the band consists of Canadian siblings: Nick, on vocals; Sebastien on lead guitar and vocals; and David on the rhythm guitar. Also in the band are Shuja Tasin on the drums and Ivan Cagle, a UH graduate, on the bass guitar. According to Sebastien and Nick, the band’s sound is influenced by Fall Out Boy and events that occured while they were growing up. They have a full-length studio album, “Forgetting Yesterday,” that can be found on iTunes and is available at other online music stores. “Nick and I write the music,” Sebastien said. “For this album we mostly used Nick’s older songs. I just changed the music.” David described the influence he believes their music should have. “ Our music tries to convey a positive message,” David said.“We are trying to encourage people with our lyrics. The Fisher brothers were raised in a Christian home and lived all over the globe from India and Mexico to Canada.” After pushing through financial difficulties and finding a drummer through Craiglist, they have made a name for themselves in Texas through the Alt Texas Tour Terminatour. The band’s plans for the future include filming a video for “Sleepless Night,” tour the west coast and record another album. The band hopes to get picked up by a record company “and get signed,” Nick Fisher said. Caney Creek Heroes will be back in the UC Satellite on Feb. 17, to promote their upcoming shows with more music and balloon animals.

Upon picking up Caney Creek Heroes’ album, “Forgetting Yesterday,” one can’t help but be immediately attracted to the cartoon artwork on the cover. It was drawn by vocalist Nick Fisher; other members of CCH include Sebastien Fisher, David Fisher, Ivan Cagle and Shuja Yasin. Their sound is a unique mix of punk rock with a hint of hardcore. The album begins with a lovely melody that introduces pop-punk guitar riffs, which set the tone and lead into the second song on the album, “Inside You”. The lyrics are strong, and their faith is unabashedly brought to the forefront passionately. “Sleepless Night” changes the mood a bit when the vocals come in with the traditional ‘90s punk sound that continues into the chorus. The hardcore guitar chords creep in during transitions, keeping the listener on his or her toes and breaking the nostalgic tone. Skipping ahead, “Forgive” boasts a quirky chorus, synth-choir background and is a unique addition to the album. The message of love and forgiveness shines throughout the lyrics and melody. This leads to the upbeat track, “Jack.” One of the best features of this track is the keys that pound out a beautiful melody; coming in at a close second were the guitar riffs in the background. The nostalgic punk sound returns in “The Princess and the Pauper,” which is most notable in Nick Fisher’s vocals and the guitar’s melodic intro. The cliché of the dorky guy wanting the princess is told through a musical narrative that fits well with the punk tone of the song. A hardcore scream that surprisingly fit well within the track left the song with an open-ended feeling. “Forgetting Yesterday,” the album’s namesake, certainly did not disappoint. The message of forgetting the past and looking toward the future along with the synth choir gives the track a hopeful tone. The last track on the album, “Thousand Dream” opens acoustically and swells into a dramatic band entrance. The acoustic break is a calm refreshing sound that is mixed well with the spoken word. The message of needing something more than ourselves is the heart of this song — and perhaps even the entire album; it was a great ending track. Caney Creek Heroes return to the UC-Satellite today to promote their show at Fitzgerald’s on Sunday.

They say everything is bigger in Texas and local band Caney Creek Heroes out of New Caney, Texas is, without doubt, the 194 oz. steak of local Texan pop/punk. If you have any inclination towards their noted influences: Fall Out Boy, Switchfoot, Blink182, and SUM 41, you really need to stop what you're doing and check these guys out. CCH's guitar riffs and vocals are most distinctly reminiscent of Fall Out Boy and New Found Glory: the beasts within this subset of pop/punk. Lead vocalist, Nick Fisher, never fails, though, to place his own little spin on that familiar sound, as can be heard in his brilliant use of falsetto in their song "Sleepless Night". "Sleepless Night" is, without a doubt, my personal favorite off their album "Forgetting Yesterday". The song is sincere, energetic, and just the perfect amount of radio-friendly. The entire album is about as tight as it could be with a wonderfully rich guitar sound that never fails to deliver the "axe-chills" with every riff. (axe-chills;goosebumps from killer, full-sounding guitar riffs). So, take the steak challenge and have a listen to these guys. A Midnight In Chicago by
Don’t let their boyishly good looks and charm deceive you; the fellows from A Midnight In Chicago are not here to power ballad their way to your heart. Describing their sound as a hybrid of “1920’s Eerie Chicago Swing with a new school flare of breakdowns, heavy guitars driving bass and insanely catchy beats” their sound is difficult to categorize; other than alternative music in the true sense of the word. The infectious lyrics from songwriters Nick & Sebastien Fisher range from longing to wistful to bizarre in seconds. “We have a bit of everything going on up there on stage. On the one hand it’s fun and rowdy like rock and roll normally is, and on the other it can get real heavy, not only musically, but emotionally as well in certain songs” adds Sebastien. This raw emotion can be felt at their live shows where entertaining the audience is high on the agenda. “We like to try to keep our sets as action packed as possible. I noticed that a lot of bands forget to put the SHOW in a rock show. So we try to be as entertaining as possible and really put on a show, explains Lead Singer, Nick Fisher”. The band emerged in 2011 with members Singer/songwriters Nick Fisher and Sebastien Fisher, bassist Mike Honeycutt, drummer Jeff Bowers and guitarist David Fisher. Although most of the members had floated around the Houston music scene for a while this project came with a fresh angle – a clear vision and business oriented approach to get A Midnight In Chicago to new levels. The method proved to be successful for the Band who was lined up to open for national acts such as The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and performed at the Vans Warped Tour all within a year. Known for their high energy shows, A Midnight In Chicago can be found performing regularly at the House of Blues, Fuel Cyber Cafe and Scout Bar. As fickle as the Houston music scene can be, the Band knows that their fans aren’t going to come out to see a half ass show and they can’t survive without connecting with their fans. In April 2012 the Band released their self-titled Debut EP and is soon to release their music video for their first single “Crazy”. They also joined Snoring Gorilla Management earlier this year which is coincidentally responsible for getting Houston Band Lost Element signed to a record label attesting to A Midnight in Chicago’s potential.
