“I say hey, wave to the world, this is my day … this is my time, I’m going to shine.” Budding singer/songwriter Aaron Young’s lyrics from his single, “Say Hey,” have never been more true for him than since he completed his time as a Hesston (Kan.) As Young puts it, the song is a message about “standing up for yourself and showing the world that you’re not afraid of being who you are.” After two years of working on his music career while being a full-time student and a member of the men’s basketball team, he is seeing his efforts start to pay off. Just weeks after leaving Hesston and returning to his hometown of Kansas City, Mo., Young saw his dreams of performing his music for all of America come to fruition when he was selected for a live audition on the Fox network’s hit singing competition, “The X Factor.” With new opportunities ahead, he credits his years at Hesston as the most important in his musical growth. “Hesston was probably the single most significant move in my career to date,” said Young. “It’s there that I grew as a writer and musician. My Hesston experience gave me material that shaped my music.” As the end of the school year came to a close, Young wasn’t sure what life after Hesston College would look like—should he transfer to a new college to continue his education and play basketball, or should he pursue his dreams of a music career full time? Then doors started to open. An online video audition landed Young, who at Hesston was more commonly known as AY, and his brother AJ Young a spot on the “The X Factor.” The Young brothers will make their television debut with a pre-recorded performance when the new season airs at 7 p.m., Sept. 12. “This is a huge step in my music career,” said Young. “I love watching ‘The X Factor,’ so I am excited to be on the show and let America see what I can do.” For their television debut performance, which was filmed at Kansas City’s Sprint Center in mid-June in front of celebrity judges and a live audience, the brothers covered the song “Waiting on the World to Change” by John Mayer with some additional lyrics written by Young. As they advance through the competition, they hope to perform more original songs. With Young’s roots in hip hop, and his brother’s in a blues rock style, they hope their unique combination will carry them far. “I want to do stuff that has never been done before—our own original lyrics and beat— just be us,” said Young. The brothers will have to earn their way through the competition, performing each week and being pushed through to the next round with the approval of the judges and the support of viewers as they compete for a $5 million recording contract with Syco/Sony Music. Young had only just begun exploring his musical talents when he transferred to Hesston from the University of Missouri – Kansas City in the fall of 2010. He was recruited as a student athlete and a member of the men’s basketball team, but with a new interest in growing a music career, he also found time to be a part of the Hesston College Chorale, take private voice lessons and create new music. “Aaron is, in many ways, one of the most eclectic guys I have met,” said Hesston men’s basketball coach Dustin Galyon. “He had friends in all different groups and so many interests and things that he enjoyed and experienced. His story, his narrative, helped me and a lot of other people on campus be more aware of life outside of Hesston, and think critically about where people come from and the experiences they have in their lives.” Set with a library of his own poetry and musical inspiration from his brother AJ, Young began setting his poetry to music, and the first compositions from AY-MusiK were born. “My poetry and lyrics come from things I see in the world that I like and don’t like,” said Young. “I feel like I make music that is different than anybody else out there.” Young spent countless hours in Hesston’s music practice rooms working on lyrics and melodies for his songs. Performances at chapel, special events and on-campus concerts gave him a place to test his music with an audience, preparing him for the nation-wide audience he will face on “The X Factor.” Young’s new-found success hasn’t come by chance, but due to taking hold of opportunities, taking chances and careful networking, he says. Even before “The X Factor” came along, “Say Hey” was a contender to be a warm-up for the artist Drake’s summer tour in an online competition. Although he finished in third place, to his brother’s first place finish, Young saw it as a success and a step in the right direction. AY-MusiK had taken the first steps into the competitive music business. “Whatever Aaron decides to do, wherever his life and career take him, he will go all in with it,” said Galyon. “He has big dreams and he isn’t afraid to voice them or believe he will achieve them.” This summer Young has connected with a music magazine, is working on finishing material for his first album, beginning filming for the independent documentary “The Young Brothers,” meeting artists and learning the music business. The middle of July will find him in California to begin further competition in “The X Factor” and working toward making it through to the live shows, slated for October. “The whole world is opening up, and it’s amazing,” said Young. For The Fans (FTF) by Wheat City Magazine
Kansas City’s very own rising stars have come together for the likes of music, Trayvon Martin, and Kansas City. The creative collective of artists have complied an album inspired by the lifestyle of young musicians bound to create good music. AY is the host of the album and the personality behind the skit character Corey Baxter, a young with a raspy voice because he was shot in the throat leaving a convenient store buying a bag of skittles. Sound a little familiar well it should but don’t worry the album isn’t full of political comments nor racist rhymes. It’s more of a compilation of inspiring music for those in love with life, women, and music as a whole. With some very intuitive production, For the Fans does deliver on many levels but does miss its mark in a few categories. AY-MusiK is a creative artist with a vision to match and he does nothing short but give his all when entering the booth and mastering his music. His lyrics may recall those of B.o.B., a young Andre 3k, or Lupe Fiasco in his earlier works. Given the instruments given AY has created a wonderful piece of work that will not go unnoticed by music in the KC hip-hop arena. Available on DatPiff.com, FTF doesn’t give you what you would assume would be bass droppin bangers that you have come accustom to from DatPiff, but a more melodic groove that only a musician can offer as oppose to a rap artist. AJ Young is a very profound vocalist that uses emotion as an instrument just as much as an acoustic guitar which give the album a very genuine vibe. Irv Da Phenom who has worked with the hottest emcees in the Kansas City area such as Tech N9ne, Mac Lethal and Dutch Newman shows his influence and expertise on the album as well. ESQ is a visionary in his own right and his work on the “Anti-Mannequin Movement” has trickled into the likes of FTF which can only add up to one conclusion, that FTF is strictly for the fans. If you are a fan of hip-hop or good music in general FTF is a good choice for your playlist. And if your from the Kansas City area then you already know all of these artist will give you an ear full.
