In the tradition of Carlos Santana, Contemplation is a mixture of instrumentals and songs written by Greg and performed by local New York area artist Thulani Jefferies. His music is an eclectic blend that is sure to please the palates of music lovers with appetites for a wide-range of musical genres.
His musical journey started at the age of 14 when one of his best friends taught him to play the piano. The focus of Greg’s study was Gospel music. Growing up on 183rd St and Southern Blvd in the Bronx, NY, he was exposed to the music of the neighborhood: salsa and reggae. While not an original fan of these genres, over time the constant exposure made him a happy convert.
To add a little more flavor, his father was a fan of Jimmy Smith, B.B. King, and John Lee Hooker. At a time when Michael Jackson’s Thriller album was king, this music seemed totally foreign to the budding young musician. However, as in the case of salsa and reggae, with time came an appreciation of jazz and the blues.
Now, life has come full circle. You can hear the music of Greg’s youth in the pieces he composes today. Not willing to be pigeon-holed into one genre, Gregory Q. Jenkins continues to create music which draws upon the traditions of many different styles. He hopes to introduce people to music that they may not have normally listened to in the same manner as did his father and the neighborhood where he once lived.
