Spotlight: Lansing Bless fest this weekend by Lansing State Journal (HUB)

'Hometown' boy to headline country music concert by Larry Hook
Country singer-songwriter Eric Jerome Brodberg only lived in Leslie for a few years, but said he still considers the community to be his hometown. ”From the age of 14 to 17, the time we lived in Leslie, it was a good growing period for me — musically especially,” Brodberg said. “In Leslie, I did the talent show in 10th grade and that was like the beginning of it.” The 34-year-old Brodberg, who now lives in Lansing, recently released his first professional CD. He will return to his “hometown” as the headliner of a country music concert on Saturday, Nov. 8. The event will take place at the Leslie American Legion Hall at 422 Woodworth St. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the concert begins at 8. Tickets are $12 each. The show will open with rockin’ country singer David Allen Cranfill and his band, Cry’n Wolf. Tracy (Treesh) Anderson, a 1994 graduate of Leslie High School, will follow on stage. Brodberg, who plays guitar, and his band Soldiers of the Cross, will perform “positive” country music, starting around 10 p.m. “My music is described as a type of country/ gospel with a modern sound that’s easy to listen to,” Brodberg said. “I always start my show off with Let’s Stand For God and I always close it with Call OnGod.” That’s the message I’m called to give. It’s the message of Jesus’ life and what he’s done for us. “I want to reach the world with God’s word and use the gift of music that’s He’s given me to get His message out,” Brodberg added. Brodberg and his band will perform several original songs as well as a few cover tunes, such as the classic Amazing Grace and Vince Gill’s Go Rest High On That Mountain. The show is family friendly and there will be no alcohol sales, Brodberg said. Concessions will be available and Brodberg’s self-titled debut CD will be on sale. Brodberg said he is thrilled to be able to perform in Leslie, where he created so many happy memories. He fondly recalled his appearance as a sophomore in the Leslie High School talent show. “I performed House of the Rising Sun. I took third place and won $15,” he said with a laugh. “I remember my legs were shaking and I was playing and looking down most of the time. That was my first time ever singing in front of a big crowd. “Music has always been the thing for me, even when I was a little kid. All I wanted to do was sing and play guitar and get out there in front of people.” Tickets for the concert will be on sale at the door.
