Dolson’s Gonna Crash Into EJ Thomas Hall This Satu by
Northeast Ohio’s own piano and vocal driven rock band Dolson will be performing with Lovedrug this Saturday at the EJ Thomas Hall. Ever since I discovered Joe Jackson, I wonder why there aren’t more piano based pop / rock bands. It’s great to have one in the neighborhood. I spoke to Andy from Dolson recently about how the band came together, their musical influences and who controls the stereo on road trips: 60: How did the band get together? Andy: “The current line up of Dolson, myself (Andy), JCK, Zac, and Cushman have really only been playing together as a band since late 2009. JCK and I knew each other from high school and he’d been playing guitar for the past few Dolson gigs with myself and another drummer who quit right after our album release show. Zac was, and still is playing with another band from the area that I recorded over the summer, so he offered to fill a few dates when our drummer left, and Cushman, well, I ran into him at a random show we were both at. We needed someone to play bass for our tour in January. He’s actually a guitar player, and used to do most of the writing for a band called Blush, but he agreed to play bass for the tour. The four of us rehearsed together and the music worked, but spending the time together on the road really solidified us as a band. From having to tie the muffler back onto our station wagon on the way to Pittsburgh, to hitting a cop with our trailer in NYC, these types of events really form lasting bonds.” 60: When the band goes on tour, who dominates the van stereo the most? Andy: “So far we try and let everyone have at least some radio time, but if I’m honest, it’s probably me. I drive the most, and I actually prefer to listen to podcasts while I drive. Stuff You Should Know, This American Life, and CD Baby DIY Musician are some of my favorites. The guys like ‘em too. At least that’s what they tell me to my face.” 60: Who’s your musical hero? What’s your favorite album from them? How have they influenced your music? Andy: “My personal musical hero is definitely Ben Folds. As a piano guy growing up in the 90′s I don’t think there’s anyone else who makes that instrument as cool as him. I used to hate all the classical pieces my piano teacher made me learn. Eventually I quit, but when I discovered Ben Folds Five i’d sit for hours at the piano listening to the “Whatever and Ever Amen” record figuring out the parts bit by bit. As a band though, I think we all listen to a lot of Mute Math, and since we’re all multi-instrumentalists, it’s been fun to experiment with our live show.” (I wandered off “Whatever and Ever Amen” a bit for the ben folds video, it was this or “brick” and everybody’s heard “brick”…) 60: What’s a good example of a song of yours that’s been influenced by Ben? Andy: “Well, if we’re going for a song that’s been influenced by Mr. Folds, then I’d have to say I’d want to play ‘I’ll Never Be’ somewhere between the 1st chorus and the 2nd verse. That’s the part of the song where we get a little crazy. If you’re a Ben Folds fan you’ll definitely hear the influence. I think you’ll like it, but watch out. It’s catchy.” Dolson, “I’ll Never Be,” from EIGHTYNINE 60: Suppose a long-lost childhood friend comes back into your life. They have no idea what you folks have been up to musically, or even that you were in a band. What’s the first song you’re going to play them, and why? Andy: “I’d have to go with ‘Can’t Keep On Running.’ That’s by far my favorite song on the record musically, and the band’s favorite song to play live. It starts slow, just guitar and vocals and builds up to this “epic” ending, as JCK would put it, with the cellos, drums, and lots of noise. It’s a very emotional song, and the music really communicates that. It’s great on the record, but it just captivates me when we perform it live. While browsing the website for Akron concert club Musica, I heard an irresistible song by the band Dolson, a piano-driven rouser titled “I’ll Never Be.” Then I discovered that Dolson is appearing Saturday night at Musica, and that two of the band members are Cantonians — bass player Andrew Cushman, formerly of Blush, and guitarist Patrick Boyle. Vocalist-pianist-songwriter Andy Dolson, who started taking piano lessons as a grade-schooler, was a solo artist until he put the band together a year and a half ago. He has recorded two albums in Nashville, both mixed by Vance Powell, who engineers for Jack White. The latest, titled “Eighty-Nine,” which has attracted wide radio play, is available via iTunes and at the band’s shows. “We’ve done really well this fall, doing club shows and college shows in the area,” Dolson, 26, says. “I don’t think we’ve ever played a show where we haven’t gotten a good reaction.” Not surprisingly, he is a big fan of pop-rock pianist Ben Folds. Dolson has been writing songs since he was in seventh grade and took up the guitar. “They were more fun type stuff. I never saw (music) as something I could realistically do as a career,” he says. “I played a couple of open-mike nights, got asked to come back. That’s what got me moving in that direction. By now, you’re probably thinking to yourself that you really hoped you’d never have to read another one of my columns ever again. Before I go on any further, I would like to take a moment to tell you, the reader that you are not obligated to continue reading. Last time I checked a map, this is America. For those who are happy, I have triumphantly returned and wish to continue reading: I’m back, baby! And I have so much to say! Let’s start with last Saturday. If you missed the Stage Door concert at E.J. Thomas, you lose. It was really something we’ll dub “neat.” I’ve never been to a concert at E.J. before, but that’s mostly because the atmosphere seemed too fancy for me. No, I’m not saying I prefer back alley bars and biker brawls, but seat checkers wearing suits and balcony views seem a little unnatural for a rock show. This was totally different! The entrance was located through the stage door, which I’m guessing is why they called it a “stage door concert.” On the stage were places to sit, a bar in the far back and a stage for the the bands. Yeah, a stage on top of a stage. It confused me for a second, too. It pretty much looked like any other average venue. Well, except for the curtain and the empty stadium seats behind the stage. And the topic, Dolson was great! I’ve never seen them play before, but they rocked! They seem to be pretty popular in Akron, and I felt like most of the fans were there for them. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to take anything away from Lovedrug. They put on a great show, but Dolson’s a local band and front man Andy Dolson is an Akron alumni. Don’t get too excited for me, but I actually got to hang out with him for a little bit backstage. Although, technically since the stage on the stage was facing the back of the stage, I guess you’d say I hung out with him in front of the stage? A Paradox? Or an Abbot and Costello routine? Either way, I stole a chip when he wasn’t looking. Don’t tell anyone.
