The power in Emilia Vancini’s music emanates from her voice. In “Il Nostro Concerto,” Vancini’s husky, soulfully rich vocals soar through the heavens. It is a voice that is made for large, open-air arenas, able to carry through long distances. This is no timid songstress; Vancini sings with punch, with emotional fervor. “Whatever Possessed Me” exists then as a showcase for that particular talent, to hear those vocals and walk away stunned. Vancini has that effect on the listener. Born in Cento, Italy, Vancini’s first love was classical music, which she was introduced to as a child. That might explain her approach to singing. Hearing Vancini perform any of the tracks on “Whatever Possessed Me,” there is a sense that she is aware her voice itself is an instrument. Just listen to how sweeping her vocals are on “Hey John”; they’re as lushly romantic as a violin’s dulcet tones. On “Io Che Amo Solo Te,” her silky voice is as softly dreamy as the piano that provides her accompaniment. The style that Vancini sings, quintessentially Italian, is not commonly heard stateside, and it alone easily elevates “Whatever Possessed Me” from the competition. Vancini doesn’t reign in her feelings; rather, she allows them to pour out, from the glowing happiness of “Things Are Getting Better” to the unguarded infatuation of the title cut. It helps, too, that Vancini’s group provides her with some top-notch musicianship. The Latin-inflected “Fã Da Bahia” opens up with wonderfully jubilant tropical rhythms and is further propelled by crisply strummed acoustic guitar. “Hey John” and “Things Are Getting Better” ride high with energized Big Band settings. The piano playing throughout the record also never hits a false note, painting the images that Vancini vividly describes with her heartbreakingly pretty after-hours voice. In the end, it’s the listeners who will end up getting possessed and enjoy every minute of it.

Jazz vocalist Emilia Vancini doesn't know what possessed her on her latest album. But anyone who listens to the record will know what possessed them: The deep, smoky croon of an Italian original. Vancini's voice, laced with atmosphere and a world-weary ache, seems to have crept out of ‘40s film noir. You can almost picture her in flickering black-and-white frames, singing sadly in a club of men in hats and the glamorous women who adore them. Vancini is a throwback, for sure; she is an echo of a time when jazz was music that was extension of the soul and not the pocketbook. On Whatever Possessed Me, Vancini returns vocal jazz to its roots. Vancini was born in Northern Italy in Cento, a small town close to Bologna. Vancini's passion for music is rooted at an early age. She was already taking piano lessons when she was only seven, encouraged by her mother and sister. Fascinated by classical music, she started studying the works of Bach, Chopin, and Ravel, among others, collecting albums in which their compositions were performed. As she grew older, Vancini's musical tastes expanded, listening to the British, American, and Italian pop, rock, and blues records that her siblings regularly played at the house. However, it was jazz that truly stuck with her, that lit the fire within her. In 1992, Vancini moved to Holland to further explore the art of jazz. Whatever Possessed Me encapsulates everything that Vancini has learned - and experienced - about jazz. It is not the sound of a newcomer but the work of a veteran who has mastered her craft, from the Brazilian stomp of "Fã Da Bahia" to the tear-jerking balladry of the title track. It is an album that speaks of life's travels through the dazzling poetry of Vancini's magnificent singing.
