In the city of Detroit, a place that has been historically known for producing new music and talent, it seems only right that Jstokes would be born and raised there, indulging in all that the city has to offer. If the sultry and sassy sounds of Chrisette Michele could be mixed with the raw and authoritative grooves of Alicia Keys, somewhere in the middle you would find Jstokes.
Jstokes, J standing for Jennifer, has been singing pretty much her entire life. Singing came so natural to Jennifer. Getting her start in the church at the mere age of six, music has continued to play a major role throughout her life. She attended one of Detroit’s most historical high schools, Cass Tech. It was here were she nurtured her gift for music. As a violinist she earned her position as Concert Mistress of the high school Symphony Orchestra. The environment also allowed her to make life long connections with like-minds that shared the same passion for music. One person in particular that has played a major role in Ms. Stokes’ pursuit of music is a musical genius that goes by the name of Darell ‘Red’ Campbell. He is a musician/producer that has worked with a wide array of artists such as Stevie Wonder, Anita Baker, Eminem, and Marcus Belgrave, just to name a few.
Jennifer and Red began working on her first solo project in the summer of 2003. The project seemed to move at turtle speed due to the fact that Jennifer attended college out of state at Purdue University to get her B.S. in Animal Science. Upon completion of the program in just 4 short years, Jstokes returned home geared up and determined to complete the project which she had formerly begun.
In 2007, with just a few short months of work, Jstokes was able to complete her self-written, independent music project, "Golden Lady". Jstokes has been writing music since she was a young teenager. She draws much of her inspiration for her lyrics from everyday life. From the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, many can relate to the heartfelt message in her music. “Golden Lady” is filled with a compilation of soulful R&B that will keep your head bobbing, and little bit of jazz to mellow things out.
“So, what’s going on with Jstokes now,” you ask? She has been rocking the stage throughout Metro Detroit promoting her album. She performs with the presence that only a veteran would have. Head rocking, finger snapping, hand clapping soul music is what’s in store when you attend one of her shows. Venues were she has graced the stage include Arts, Beats, & Eats, Greektown Casino, Detroit Riverdays, Final Four 2009, Taste Pizzabar, Bert’s Warehouse, Oslo, and numerous private functions. Not only does she find time to do all of these appearances, she also is a full-time veterinary student at Michigan State University! Talk about a degree well earned…be sure to call her Dr. Stokes in 2011!
With every day that passes, Jennifer is grateful to be blessed to share her voice once again with those that are there to listen. Many fans have said that it was only a matter of time before this songstress would get the opportunity to share her voice with the world. The sun is shining brightly on this golden lady, and there will surely be more to come!
