Yng SkoLA was born in Wilmington NC, but through shuffling around the states as a kid, he has ended up in California. He states that his reason for writing is to show that all rapin' doesn't have to be acting. He says "A lot of people get in front of a mic and start repeating what they think is appealing instead of what they know and whats real... If the lyrics and stories you tell aren't your, what are you really talkin' bout."

As a college student SkoLA places education as a priority, hence the name, and with a capital LA to homage to the cit he's grown form.
