About the ArtistSometimes you have to leave town to come home, and sometimes you learn to appreciate the magnetism that calls you back. Emerging from Portland, Oregon, The Russian Brides, a band of friends after several years of collaboration, have created this unique brotherhood and body of work.
Only a few years ago, three of the bands’ members could be heard in Portland’s own, The Dragonflies. After a successful semi-commercial run, guitarist Scott Byrd, bassist Jeff Buehner, and drummer Steve May were anxious to continue on their musical journey. The answer was soon found only a few hours to the north. Fresh off a US tour with the Geoff Tate (Queensryche) solo project, Seattle singer/guitarist Jeff Carrell was sketching ideas for something new. Geoff Tate had developed an appreciation for Carrell's songwriting, voice, and style, asking him for assistance in the writing process for his solo project. Carrell agreed and the result was titled, “Geoff Tate” (Sanctuary). The record was released, and a tour followed. While considering the experience invaluable, Carrell looked forward to reemerging with something fresh, something different. Most importantly, he missed fronting, something he was molded to do. The obvious happened; he began to write. During a visit to Seattle, he and bassist Jeff Buehner laid down some tracks. The songs quickly found their way to Scott Byrd and Steve May, and within weeks Carrell made the move to his original roots in Portland. Carrell and Byrd began finding their face together as songwriters. A distinctive sonance emerged, and was only complete when Portland guitarist Brian McGrew added the final textures to the sound. Portland's most sought after producer, Sean Norton was eager to put his stamp on the project and a fifteen song recording was completed. Despite long hours in the studio, the recording process was almost effortless. Multi-platinum producer, Ron Nevison, also took a special interest in the band, often visiting the studio during recording. When the final mix was complete, it was soon hand-delivered to Brian “Big Bass” Gardner at Bernie Grundman’s mastering facility in Hollywood, CA. where such bands as The Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age have completed their projects.
The Russian Brides are a band of friends, the sound is a unique blend of musical experiences, and the future is in the hands of the listener.
