Killing time in a smoky room, Jerrod Prater sparks up another cigarette and takes a long, slow drag through the filter. Though he’s just old enough to be legally lighting up, he somehow seems comfortable with his current vice. As the former bass player for hardcore band Julietta and guitarist for The Critically Acclaimed, Jerrod brings years of experience to his latest project, This City Alive. And when the smoke clears, you’ll find that Jerrod is exactly what he seems to be: funny, sincere and charming. AGE: 18 HOMETOWN: Edinburg NOW LIVE IN: Edinburg ONLINE: www.myspace.com/thiscityalive NEXT GIG: On U.S. tour My most recent wardrobe malfunction went down like this “I used to be in choir and we had these spring shows in front of thousands of people. We were over there doing our thing and I remember having a big malfunction. I was wearing suspenders and I was dancing and the suspender strap snapped at the buckle, came up and slapped me right below the eye. It gave me a nice big cut. I kept on dancing though. There was blood all over the place.” Were you an ugly duckling? “I was an ugly kid. My head was too big for my body. It’s a good thing I had gigantic feet to hold me up.” If you were to nominate someone to be the hottest rocker guy or gal from the Valley, who would you choose? “Eddie from Scarlett O’Hara. Even though he’s kinda small, he just has this attitude like, he knows he’s hot. He has a lot of self-confidence. If you believe in you, people will believe in you. He’s got a lot of that.” Name one unique talent you have that most people don’t know about? “ I’m kind of flexible. I can touch the top of my head to my belt buckle.” What do you think is your best physical feature? “I’m still trying to find it. I guess I have a broad chest. I guess it’s my favorite part.” If you want to catch the opposite sexes’ attention, what’s your first move? “I’d linger for a little bit. Maybe about five minutes. Then I’d walk over to the girl and say, ‘Hey, look, I just think you’re beautiful. And I knew I was just going to kick myself if I didn’t just get your name and a handshake.’” What’s the biggest mistake girls make on the first date? “Not letting the boy be a gentleman. Automatically always opening her own car door and making it harder on the guy to be a gentleman.” Who inspires you the most? “I would say Jason Lancaster. When I went to go record in Georgia, I got to perform with him. He’s one of the greatest singers I know. To get to play with him was pretty cool.” How much do you think your appearance plays a part in the popularity of your band? “You know, it’s getting easier to book gigs if you look the part.”
